Manager David Jackson set the scene well for the third leg of the Royal`s new life, and a national acting company was born to tour Scotland.
Visiting companies soon came on a regular pattern, from the National Theatre in London`s South Bank, the National Shakespeare in Stratford-upon-Avon, to Sadler`s Wells Royal Ballet and the Harlem Dance Theatre. For national drama the new Scottish Theatre Company started in Glasgow in 1980, with its first productions in 1981. The theatre`s diary gave priority to Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet, and the Scottish Theatre Company.
To all this was added a wide range of shows, plays and events from folk music to jazz, starting with Stephane Grappelli; musicals to concerts; children`s shows to charity galas. The Theatre Royal became a venue of the annual Mayfest, from its start in 1983; which was city-wide and soon became the second largest arts festival in Britain.
